拉什福德不再俱乐部的未来规划之中，新帅阿莫林也不喜欢他在训练中的态度。另外，拉什福德的比赛风格也不符合阿莫林的要求。因此，随着冬季转会窗即将到来，曼联可以通过出售英格兰前锋为葡萄牙教头筹集引援所需资金。
曼联高层担心拉什福德在球场之外的生活方式，他们觉得这名红魔青训营培养的前锋有可能不再专注于足球。对于曼联高层而言，另外一个关键点是拉什福德高昂的薪资。
拉什福德的年薪接近1600万欧元，英力士集团入主俱乐部后，这样的高薪球员成为他们的清洗目标，因为他们希望降低俱乐部总的薪水支出，引入工资帽制度，从而让俱乐部处在财政公平法案所要求的范围之内。
除了前锋之外，曼联希望在即将到来的冬窗引进一名左后卫和一名中场，这名中场最好可以覆盖两个禁区。在曼联看来，亚特兰大中场埃德森能够很好地满足这一需求。
